The story arc of Battlestar Galactica is set in a distant part of the universe. A civilization of humans live on a series of planets known as the Twelve Colonies. In the past, the Colonies have been at war with a cybernetic race known as the Cylons. With the help of a human named Gaius Baltar, the Cylons launch a sudden ambush on the Colonies, laying waste to the planets and devastating their populations. The handful of human survivors flee into space aboard any spacecraft they can reach. Of all the Colonial Fleet, the Battlestar Galactica appears to be the only battlestar that survived the attack. Under the leadership of Commander William Adama, the Battlestar Galactica and its crew lead the small fugitive fleet of survivors into space in search of a fabled refuge known as Earth.
Just prior to the Cylon attack on the Colonies, Laura Roslin is the Secretary of Education. During the attack on the Colonies, Roslin is informed that she is the highest ranking surviving member of the presidential line of succession, and is sworn in as president.
During the course of the series, Roslin comes to believe that she is the prophesied leader who will lead her people to Earth. The humans in Battlestar Galactica are polytheistic, believing in a system of gods similar to ancient Greek gods.
There are some small changes in language in the BSG universe. For example, frak is the equivalent of our fuck. Because of their polytheism, BSG humans use gods, instead of god. For example, "Oh, gods" or "Godsdamnit."
In my story, Lords of Kobol, Hear My Prayer, Laura Roslin is running for re-election as president. She's running against Gaius Baltar, her vice-president. In addition, throughout the first and second season of BSG, Laura was suffering from breast cancer and nearly died, until she was miraculously saved with an infusion of human-Cylon hybrid blood. In the meantime, a crew of officers has traveled to Caprica to rescue a small group of survivors known to be still alive on the planet.
President Laura Roslin:
In the X-Files series, FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are the investigators of X-Files: marginalized, unsolved cases involving paranormal phenomena. Mulder is a "believer" in the existence of aliens and the paranormal, while Scully, a skeptic, is assigned by powerful forces to debunk and control Mulder's unorthodox work. In fact, early in the series both agents turn into pawns in a larger conflict , and come to trust only each other, a close relationship that eventually turns romantic.
In addition to being an FBI agent, Dana Scully (who is usually referred to as just "Scully" by Mulder) is also a medical doctor. Her specialty is pathology and she frequently performs autopsies. Like Laura Roslin, Scully is a survivor of cancer, having nearly died from a tumor in her sinus cavity. And like Roslin, Scully was saved by a "miracle."
In the AU world of this story, Scully and Mulder were agents for the Colonial Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Scully is a survivor of the attack on the colonies and a doctor in the Colonial Fleet. She frequently comes to Galactica to assist Dr. Sherman Cottle, the fleet's chief medical officer. In addition, she has been working on Presdient Roslin's re-election campaign.
